Tennessee halts all executions after a botched lethal injection. Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee's death row, survived a failed execution attempt on September 30 and remained in critical condition a day later, her attorneys said. The state had been trying to execute her for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Governor Bill Lee ordered an immediate halt to all executions in the state pending a review of what went wrong, making Pike's case one of the most closely watched capital-punishment stories of the year.

The Supreme Court will review Trump's mandatory detention policy for immigrants. The justices agreed to take up a major test of the administration's push to hold certain immigrants in custody without a bond hearing while their cases proceed, after lower courts split on whether the policy is lawful. The ruling, expected later in the court's term, could reshape how immigration enforcement operates nationwide.

ICE is tightening the rules on vehicle stops and chases. A new Department of Homeland Security memo bars high-speed car chases and sets stricter limits on traffic stops by immigration agents, following fatal shootings during ICE vehicle stops in Maine and Texas earlier this year. The guidance follows an earlier directive that told agents to curtail most vehicle stops altogether.

The Pentagon says it will help guard election systems ahead of the midterms. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that military personnel will assist in protecting election infrastructure from cyber threats during the 2026 midterm elections. The announcement comes after senators from both parties pressed Hegseth and the Joint Chiefs chairman earlier this year for assurances that the military would stay out of the elections themselves.

The economy is sending mixed signals. Weekly unemployment claims fell to 197,000, the lowest level since mid-July, a sign the labor market remains resilient. At the same time, the average long-term U.S. mortgage rate climbed to 7.28%, its highest level in nearly three years, adding pressure on homebuyers. A new AP-NORC poll found that most Americans blame President Trump for persistently high prices.
