US News Roundup – November 1, 2026

Two days before Tuesday's midterm elections, the final weekend of the campaign brought two courtroom setbacks for President Trump, a surprise cross-party endorsement in Michigan's Senate race, a health scare for a leading Senate Democrat, and the start of ACA open enrollment for 2027.

Judge throws out Trump administration's Alaska Senate lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason dismissed the Justice Department's unusual suit seeking to block certification of Alaska's U.S. Senate results if Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan loses. The suit, citing the preamble of the National Voter Registration Act, argued voters could be confused by two similarly named candidates on the ranked-choice ballot. Gleason ruled the federal government lacked the ability to bring the case and that the requested order would likely violate Alaskans' right to a secret ballot. The DOJ says it will appeal.

Trump's $10 billion suit against the Wall Street Journal dismissed.

In Miami, U.S. District Judge Darrin Gayles on Saturday threw out with prejudice President Trump's defamation lawsuit against the Journal and Rupert Murdoch over the paper's report on a birthday letter bearing Trump's name in a 2003 album compiled for Jeffrey Epstein. The judge said Trump had not shown actual malice and was "grasping at straws." Because the dismissal is with prejudice, the suit cannot be refiled.

Haley Stevens endorses Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan. Less than 48 hours before Election Day, Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers over Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated her in the Democratic primary. Stevens, who had been scheduled to appear at a unity event with El-Sayed, cited his ties to streamer Hasan Piker. El-Sayed told reporters at a Detroit "Souls to the Polls" event that the endorsement "doesn't matter" to voters focused on costs.

Sen. Chris Murphy hospitalized after a stroke. Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy, 53, suffered a stroke Saturday after feeling numbness in his arm at his son's hockey game, his office said. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins, is responding well to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. Murphy has been a prolific midterm campaign surrogate and is viewed as a possible 2028 presidential contender.

ACA open enrollment opens for 2027 coverage. Open enrollment on the Affordable Care Act marketplaces began Nov. 1 in most states. Shoppers face premium increases, new identity checks for people enrolling through agents or brokers on the federal marketplace, possible broker delays, and new limits on which immigrants qualify for subsidies. Overall enrollment is expected to keep falling after enhanced subsidies expired at the end of 2025.
