Prohibited Acts
These are some of the acts that are prohibited in the housing context under the FHA and the FEHA if they are based on protected characteristics (listed above):
- Refusing to sell or rent
- Refusing to negotiate for housing
- Making housing unavailable
- Discriminating on terms, conditions or privileges in rental or sale
- Discriminatory advertising or statements
- Discriminating in the provisions of brokerage services
- Inducing panic selling
- "Redlining"
- Restricting housing choices, by words or conduct, in connection with buying or renting a dwelling (steering)
- Harassment
- Refusing a request for reasonable accommodation or a reasonable modification due to disability
- Refusing to make a mortgage loan or other financial assistance for a dwelling
- Discriminating in appraising a dwelling
- Denying homeowners insurance coverage
- Discriminating in terms of conditions of homeowners insurance
- Giving unequal access to facilities, amenities, or common areas
- Retaliating against someone who intends to file or has filed a fair housing complaint
