U.S. stocks fell Wednesday after the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a target range of 3.75%-4.00%, the central bank's first rate hike in three years. The S&P 500 slid 0.45% to close at 7,551.81, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.21% (-631.21 points) to 51,461.90, and the Nasdaq Composite was roughly flat, edging down 0.01% to 25,978.42. The Russell 2000 small-cap index fell 0.40%.
The FOMC voted unanimously for the hike, and new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh struck a hawkish tone at his press conference, saying "inflation remains elevated" and that summer's inflation readings "do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved." Officials penciled in one additional rate hike before the end of 2026, a signal that rattled investors who had hoped the tightening cycle was nearly over. Treasury yields, which had touched their highest levels since 2007 earlier in the session, pulled back modestly after the announcement. Oil prices eased, with U.S. crude slipping toward the $104 range and Brent easing to around $108, as Saudi Arabia rerouted some supply around a Middle East pipeline disruption.
Trading was volatile beneath the index-level numbers. Chipmakers and photonics names rallied on reports that Intel and SK Hynix are in talks over a potential memory-chip partnership, sending Intel shares up more than 4% and lifting optical-component makers Coherent and Lumentum roughly 6% each. SpaceX shares also gained about 5% after the company announced an orbital Starship launch set for September 22. On the downside, trucking and logistics names were hit hard: J.B. Hunt Transport tumbled more than 12% and Old Dominion Freight Line fell more than 4% on freight-demand worries, while energy producer Diamondback Energy dropped about 8% as crude prices softened. Bitcoin slid below $76,000 after the Senate failed a procedural vote on the Clarity Act digital-asset framework. On a brighter note, August retail sales rose 1.2%, beating economists' 0.9% forecast and pointing to resilient consumer spending even as the Fed tightens policy.
