Much of this depends upon whether or not I have His perspective on the passing scene around me.

Do I really "see" the brilliant yellow blooms of the sturdy "Johnny Jump-ups" that burst from the barren clay after the first winter rains?
Do I really "see" the sea gulls soaring in wild abandon above the wind-driven surf?
Do I really "see" and give humble thanks for the gentle smile of a stranger?

What do I do with this gift of time, entrusted so tenderly to my care?

Should I waste it on worry and fretting?
Or will I learn to fling myself happily into my Father's warm embrace, and whisper softly, "Oh my Beloved, I am in Your care. Lead me gently to see life through Your eyes today."

Then it will be a treasure!Time is more, much more than something to be spent.
We speak glibly of "spending time."

It is far, far too precious to pass off in idle, empty pursuits, which means it is actually squandered-thrown away-never, ever to be retrieved.

Rather, it is to be savored, relished, cherished with care.
The profound, searching, eloquent question is, each new dawn, "What will be done with this day?"
It is a unique and special opportunity, an interval of eternity, in which the intense essence of life itself can be distilled from the moment.

It is not a question of "filling in time."
It is a matter of how can this interlude fill my soul, enrich my spirit, nourish my well being as well as the lives of others around me?

Can these hours be spent wisely and well?
Can they be a benediction and not a burden?
Can they lend strength to my soul and others?
For those of us who treasure our time there really are endless ways in which we can invest our time in others to their advantage as well as ours.

Yesterday was a case in point.
I awoke early to find a heavy blanket of snow had covered the landscape during the night.
It would be difficult for most older people to get around.

Most of them would feel "trapped" in their lodgings.
Never mind the difficult driving, the dangerous ice, I decided to go and visit a solitary old sailor in a nearby village.
When I came to his door he broke into broad smiles.
The loneliness of an otherwise long, long day had been dispelled by my arrival.
We sat in the soft, mellow glow of lamplight while he relived the stirring interludes of his adventures along the coast.
His handsome cat curled up on my lap as if to say, "This is doing the boss a world of good!"
He is a huge man, with enormous shoulders and the great strong hands of a seaman who has handled rigging and ropes and sails in heavy "blows."

Yet within that mighty frame resides the gentle soul of one who has come to love Christ with quiet faith.
It was not always so.
In his youth he had been rough and tough.
But now we spoke gently of "Our Friend," whose care and companionship have made it possible for his twilight years to be lived out in dignity.

I watched the mellow, yellow lamplight of his humble home play upon his weather-beaten face.
It was alive, quickened, moved by the joys of the moment.
Both of us relished his reminiscing.
An interval of time was being burnished like beaten gold because we were together.
Our spirits were warmed and our hearts strangely stirred by the retelling of his days by the sea.
It did not matter if the clouds outside hung heavy over our heads.
What if the overcast was dark and gray?
No matter if the snow piled more deeply at the door.
